‘Dangerous Relations’ by Anne Perreault

Cover design by Natasha Perreault

When me and Anne Perreault started to discuss the book there were several things that she wanted. One was an aircraft carrier, another was a jet. Through talking together about the heart of the book I found out that the book was about a navy man and his family. The main colors that I used for this cover was red, which intensives the mood of the book. Through research I saw that many books about the military/spies had the main characters at the top of the page and in the middle was something that divided the top from the bottom. It could be a box of a color, solid or transparent. On this the main title goes. I chose to have a white blur in the middle. For the text I chose a thick and bold typeface to give the impression of danger. The title has pieces missing from it, like it got shot at, There is a target underneath it, made in Illustrator. On the bottom I put the jet that the author wanted on it. A water background was placed underneath it (the book is about the navy after all). On the top I put the two main characters. The woman in the book is lonely and missing her husband who is a navy jet fighter. So I chose a woman for the front cover with the loneliness and longing written on her face. For the man I he has a fade on him to give the impression that he is not really there but the woman is always thinking about him. He is looking like he is thinking deeply. I like having the people on the book covers not smiling but showing their emotions through other expressions. If they are happy have their eyes be lit up and a happy look be on their face (not necessarily a smile).

For the spine and back cover I had started out with a normal medium red color. I bordered it with a yellow strip on both the bottom and top of the back. I put a catch phrase onto the top of the yellow strip. I added an aircraft carrier over this and put the blending mode to ‘Overlay’. On the spine I put ‘book 2’ on it and the author’s name and the title. But one more thing needed to done with the book. To create an even more intense feeling I put a scratched texture over the whole book and put the color mode to ‘Overlay’.
