Between the Alley
I wanted to create a feeling of mystery/historical in this book cover. I used an old darkened alleyway to set the stage of the book cover. I then turned the picture into a Duotone. A Duotone refers to an image that is made up of two different colors in it. Many famous black and white photos are really Duotones and this helps create emotion and connection with the photo to the viewer. I felt the alleyway would be much more dramatic if there was a duotone of a dark brown to it. I then duplicated the layer and put it on a soft light in the blending mode to give it more of a depth and clarity to the image. I also put a color fill of dark gray and that layer is also in the blending mode of soft light. The reason I did this was so that the lighter parts would be darker and create more of a mysterious feeling to the book.
To finish I chose an old looking type of front to help sell the thought that this is about historical times. The lines of the text is wavy and uneven, giving a sense that not all are safe. How the title is set up with ‘Between The’ above the word ‘Alley’ gives the impression of an invisible alleyway in the space between the words.
